Description
Udawalawe Reservoir is a significant man-made lake located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, situated on the border of Ratnapura and Monaragala Districts. It was constructed as part of a major hydroelectric power project in the 1960s, primarily to supply water for irrigation and generate electricity. The reservoir is an integral part of the Udawalawe National Park, which was established to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the reservoir’s construction.

Location and Construction: The reservoir was built by damming the Walawe River, with a 4.5 km long and 40-meter-high earthen embankment. It is part of the Udawalawe National Park and supplies water to the Udawalawe, Embilipitiya, and Hambantota areas.
Size and Capacity: The reservoir measures approximately 8.6 km in length and 7 km in width, holding about 268 million cubic meters of water.
Irrigation and Power Generation: It provides irrigation for rice cultivation and banana farming, and its hydroelectric power station contributes to the national electricity supply.
Wildlife and Tourism: The reservoir attracts a variety of wildlife, including elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, and numerous bird species. It is a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and offers scenic views, especially during sunrise and sunset.
